Breast enlargement surgery
A breast augmentation (breast enlargement; boob job; breast enhancement) is normally performed using silicone implants by the Consultant Plastic Surgeons at Purity Bridge. Breast implants come in a variety of styles and surfaces, with shapes including round or anatomical (shaped, or teardrop) shapes and textured or smooth surfaces (for round only). The right implant for you must be decided after a thorough consultation with your Purity Bridge Consultant Plastic Surgeon, listening to your aims; but also after a careful clinical examination to determine the "best fit" implant for your breast. There is no “perfect” implant, and because of the wide variety of differences in breasts, in terms of their shape, their age, their history (such as past breast feeding) there is no “one size fits all” breast implant.
In addition, various risk factors with the surgery and the implants themselves must be taken into account and discussed with you, to determine the right choice for you. There is often a misconception that different shaped implants will always give a consistent result - frequently we hear that anatomical implants will “always” look natural and round implants will always look more augmented. In reality, if we plan the right implant for you, after thorough discussion and careful clinical examination, we will get the best implant to give you the look you are hoping for. In many cases, a round implant can provide a very natural looking result, and sometimes, if not chosen appropriately, an anatomical implant can look very augmented.
A breast augmentation is usually performed under general anaesthetic (with you asleep) either as a day case procedure or with an overnight stay. The scar is most commonly placed near the breast crease, and during surgery, a “pocket” is created either under or over the muscle (the pectoralis major) that lies beneath the breast. This decision is determined during your pre-operative consultation.
Modern breast enlargement surgery using the latest silicone implants is a safe, reliable and predictable procedure. Whilst the results are immediate, your results continue to improve for the first 3-6 months after surgery.

Breast augmentation surgery typically takes between one and two hours and is usually performed as a day-case procedure.
At Purity Bridge in Tunbridge Wells, our Consultant Plastic Surgeons tailor every breast augmentation procedure to the individual, taking into account body proportions, lifestyle and desired outcome. The aim is always to achieve a balanced and natural-looking result rather than simply increasing breast size.
Most patients require around one to two weeks away from work, depending on the nature of their job and individual healing.
Some swelling, tightness and discomfort are expected during the early stages of recovery. These symptoms gradually improve over the following weeks, with final results becoming more apparent as the implants settle into position.
Light daily activities can usually be resumed within a few days of surgery. More strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and upper-body workouts should be avoided until your surgeon confirms it is safe to return to these activities.
Following your post-operative instructions carefully can help support healing and optimise your final result.
As with any surgical procedure, breast augmentation carries potential risks including bleeding, infection, implant rupture, capsular contracture, asymmetry and changes in nipple sensation.
During your consultation, your surgeon will explain all potential risks and benefits in detail so you can make an informed decision about treatment.
Breast augmentation may be suitable if you would like to increase breast volume, improve symmetry or restore fullness lost following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss.
A consultation with one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons will help determine whether breast augmentation is appropriate for your goals and anatomy.
Choosing implant size involves much more than selecting a cup size. Factors such as your height, body shape, existing breast tissue and lifestyle all influence the most suitable choice.
At Purity Bridge, detailed measurements and discussions help ensure the chosen implant complements your frame and creates a proportionate result.
Breast implants can make mammogram interpretation slightly more complex, but experienced radiographers routinely assess patients with implants.
It is important to inform your screening provider that you have breast implants before your appointment.
Modern breast implants are highly durable and can last for many years. They are not considered lifetime devices, but they do not automatically need replacing after a fixed period.
Regular monitoring and review can help ensure your implants remain in good condition.
