A brachioplasty is the technical name for an arm lift. This is a procedure to reduce skin excess that has developed on the upper arm. This is typically seen in people who have lost weight, those with poor quality tissues and sometimes as part of the ageing process. The skin is removed and leaves a scar along the inside of the arm from elbow through to armpit and sometimes down onto the upper side of the chest wall.

Reducing the excess skin on the upper arm reduces the sagging and movement of the skin in this area. It allows people to have the confidence to wear t-shirts and vest tops, that they might not have had due to their self-consciousness of their arm skin (unkindly referred to as bingo wings).
The operation can take 90-120 minutes, depending on the amount of excess there is to treat.
Brachioplasty surgery can have a surprising impact as after surgery you will need to limit your arm use. There should be no heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks and the wounds will be supported with surgical tapes for 2-4 weeks typically. Scars from brachioplasty surgery often remain red for many months before they fade – there are a variety of scar management interventions we would normally discuss with you during this time.
It can be 6-weeks before you get back to doing most things including exercise. The first two weeks are when you need to take things most gentle.
Arm lifting can be very successful and rewarding. It can have a positive impact on peoples’ lives on a daily basis.
