Look and Feel Your Best: Body Contouring Clinics in Tunbridge Wells

For many of us the new year brings well intentioned new year’s resolutions. Very often these include a plan to get fit, eat healthily and possibly lose weight. But sometimes, losing weight has potential unwanted effects as well as the overall desired improved sense of well-being, body image and health benefits.

Losing weight can affect our skin, it can affect our appearance and, in some cases, can actually result in areas of the body that become new areas of concern. For example, losing weight on the tummy can result in deflation of the front of the abdomen and the formation of a loose pouch, or apron, that is particularly exacerbated if it is above a slightly tethered caesarean section scar or perhaps other scars on the tummy. Although in some cases the loose pouch can simply hang over natural areas of what are referred to as “zones of adherence” in the soft tissues.

Arms are another area that frequently cause concern after weight loss, as so-called “bingo wings” or skin excess can become significant in some people. This can stop people from feeling comfortable raising their arms, particularly when wearing T-shirts or vest tops and we frequently see patients who request treatments for concerns they have with their arms who tell us that they no longer wear any tops that have short sleeves because of the significant impact their concerns over their arms have on them.

Other areas that can be significantly affected include breasts, where deflation not only results in loss of volume and emptiness of the upper poles, but frequently an increase in droop to the breast that can inhibit body confidence, impact on psychosexual well-being and restrict the freedom to be able to wear clothes that person may wish to wear. The effects of weight loss on breasts can have a profound impact on relationships due to concerns with body image during intimacy.

Fortunately there are different ways we can treat each of these areas using advanced techniques in body contouring surgery. These can range from different types of abdominoplasty or tummy tucks through to breast lifts (mastopexy), the use of carefully designed breast implants and arm lifting treatments. Of course, we have to accept that there is a trade-off for each of these procedures with, for example, the scars that results from having these procedures, as well as risks of undergoing surgery. In addition, there are the less tangible considerations relating to emotional and psychological aspects of undergoing surgical treatments.

At the end of the day, the individual decision to consider whether undergoing some form of breast or body contouring surgery to address the results of weight loss is very individual and personal and the key decision can only be reached after a careful and thorough consultation with one of our expert plastic surgeons who can tailor their advice and treatment options to your individual situation.
